The pillory was used for crimes of sedition and were common in many Kentish port towns. The stocks were more common in villages and used for punishing petty criminals before the days of ASBO's.

Producer Info

Richard Rose

Richard Rose is a gifted and traditional cabinet maker who works from a fabulous workshop in Chartham, near Canterbury. Richard discovered some years ago that many English timbers were highly expensive, if available at all. At the same time, he discovered that, on most occasions, when small quantities of trees are cleared locally, they are used only as firewood. Perversely, 30% of all UK imports are timber based products. All of this seemed quite wrong to Richard, so he set himself the task of sourcing reclaimed English timber; handling, milling and drying the local trees, before designing and making a piece of furniture. Richard works with local timber that sadly, is no longer used in mainstream furniture manufacture such as English Apple, Quarter sawn English Oak, English walnut, Wild English Cherry, English Ash and English Holly.

In addition to the beautiful and unique items for sale in the store, Richard is happy to discuss bespoke commissions from kitchen to beds so please drop us an email and we will out you in touch.
